How You Can Help
Asking informed questions of your Pediatrician is extremely important. All Pediatricians share your concerns about SIDS. Some are aware of the Sprott-Richardson Hypothesis but are not aware of the all facts surrounding it, especially its incredible success rate. The more your doctor seeks out the answers to your questions, the more informed she/he will become about all the research that has been done in this area.
After knowing all the facts you will feel compelled to seek out regulatory change in the manufacture of items in the baby’s environment especially mattress construction. Get in touch with your Local, State and Federal public officials and inform them of your concerns. Be specific in your comments and questions, and highlight particular elements, research and studies that can point their respective staffing teams in the right direction.
Donate to the No More SIDS Foundation
We are a Non-Profit organization that relies on your donations to cover the costs of educating, raising awareness, and getting crib mattresses wrapped in day care centers. It is only through your generosity that we can achieve our mission. If you have any questions about how your contribution dollars are allocated, please e-mail us at firstname.lastname@example.org.
Pass the word along
This may be the most important aspect of what you can do. Tell a friend with a newborn. Talk to an expectant mother. Share this with as many people as you can. Six infants are dying in the United States every night. Do your utmost to ensure that no one you know suffers from this most heartbreaking tragedy. Information is the best weapon against SIDS, and word of mouth is still one of the most powerful media for getting the message out. By tomorrow we will lose six more. You can help stop this.
Talk to your Day Care
Infants at day care centers are 7 times more likely to fall victim to SIDS than infants who are cared for at home. The reason for this is the increased use and reuse of mattresses at Day Care centers. Insist that your infant is put to sleep only on a mattress that is properly covered. Bringing a mattress cover specifically for you child’s mattress might be the best way to get this accomplished. New Zealand passed legislation over ten years ago that requires every day care center to meet the standard for mattress wrapping protocol. Since that legislation was enacted not a single SIDS event has occurred in a Day Care!
